Why do I keep getting outbid on eBay?

  • 7

Hi!

I’m new to eBay. I have placed bids on a couple of items, but every time I make a bid I get outbid instantly. How come?

Regards, Jonahs

As Eric rightly noted, this happens due to automatic bidding. However, it is important to note that automatic bidding, although it may seem a very convenient tool, is not a smart choice. It inevitably leads to paying more.
There are other foolish mistakes bidders make, too. For example, engaging in bidding wars. If you want to find out how to bid on eBay and pay less, read this post: https://www.shopperlib.com/how-to-bid-to-win-on-ebay-3-simple-tips/
This post describes in detail what mistakes eBay bidders make, how to avoid them, and what is the most effective bidding strategy.
It is not rocket science, but you’ll be surprised how many eBay bidders make mistakes and grossly overpay as a result.

      Hi, Jonahs!

It is due to so-called automatic bidding. If you are immediately outbid, it means that another bidder is using automatic bidding and has placed a higher bid than yours. So, automatic bidding will place an automatic bid that is one increment bigger than your bid until it reaches the other bidder’s maximum limit.

      Sincerely, Eric

Probably in these days nothing comes cheap, especially good stuff. From real-estate auctions I see that some properties even sell more in auctions that in usual market channels.

For you, one strategy would be to do the bidding at the very end of auction. And set some max budget you want to pay for the item.
